INWA’s focus, when it began, was to develop high-quality education. Nordic Walking was seen as a “fitness and exercise activity” rather than as a sport. Nowadays, Nordic Walkers are looking at different ways to use the activity for competitive sport, group walks, tours, and other events that celebrate or display Nordic Walking.
Accordingly, INWA has set up an “Events Committee” that works with members and other organisers to develop, plan and present a range of events.
INWA Events:
INWA Convention
World Nordic Walking Day
Competitive Sport
Walking Tours
INWA World Cups
INWA World Nordic Walking Championships
INWA European Nordic Walking Championships
The INWA Convention, usually held in October, is INWA’s premier event for members, trainers, and instructors. There are always excellent presentations and workshops delivered by experts. The INWA Annual General Meeting for members is held the day before the Convention begins.
Additionally, there are social events that enable participants to renew acquaintances and friendships and make new ones.
World Nordic Walking Day
World Nordic Walking Day is held in May each year. It is an opportunity for members, clubs and Nordic Walkers to join together in a range of events to celebrate Nordic Walking.
There are competitions for:
- The most walkers
- The best photo
- The oldest and youngest Nordic Walker
Competitive Sport
These include:
- Local or National championships and World Cup events
- Racing series held in different locations over a number of races and dates.
- Specialist events such as the 100m Hill Climb competitions held in Japan.
- Participation in other races where Nordic Walkers join runners and general walkers over distances ranging from marathons to 5km.
Walking Tours
INWA is keen to develop a range of non-competitive walking events and tours. It is currently working with members to develop this programme.
