The 2024 Nordic Walking World Championships took place in the challenging yet scenic Salpausselkä terrain in Lahti, despite rainy weather. More than 400 participants from 23 countries competed, with large teams from Europe, Korea, Japan, and Great Britain. The event featured three individual races and a team relay. Aki Karihtala, president of the International Nordic Walking Federation (INWA), praised the atmosphere and organization, noting that Lahti proved to be an excellent host city, with participants able to explore the local area.
The terrain, with its mix of uphill and downhill sections, received positive feedback for adding difficulty compared to previous races on flatter courses. About 25% of the competitors were Finnish, highlighting the sport’s growing popularity beyond its traditional role as a training method for skiers. Local participant Ulla Päivelin, who won gold in her age group, praised the event’s international atmosphere and high level of competition.
Event director Markku Levanen expressed satisfaction with the organisation, suggesting that Nordic walking could expand Finland’s event offerings, even outside snowy seasons. Plans for future competitions, including the 2025 European Championships at Salpausselkä, are already underway.
