Here’s why it’s great for children:

  • Improves Fitness – Nordic walking works the whole body, improving cardiovascular health, strength, and endurance.

  • Coordination and Balance – Using the poles encourages better motor skills and body awareness.

  • Encourages Time Outdoors – Kids spend a lot of time on screens; Nordic walking gives them a reason to get outside and enjoy nature.

  • Social and Fun – Nordic walking can be done with friends or as a family, making it a great group activity.

  • Gentle on Joints – The poles reduce impact on growing joints, making it a safe option for all ages.

How to Introduce Kids to Nordic Walking

1. Get the Right Equipment

For kids to enjoy Nordic walking, it’s important to have the right-sized poles. Look for adjustable poles designed for children - that will grow with them, they should be light, with comfortable grips and secure straps. The correct pole length is about 68% of the child’s height.

2. Find a group

INWA has a unique programme for teaching children Nordic Walking. The syllabus takes the INWA 10 Step Teaching Method and interweaves it with children's stages of development. It uses fun interactive games and lessons that change to fit every child's stage of development.

3. Make It a Game

Younger kids respond well to play, so turn Nordic walking into a fun challenge:

🎯 Obstacle Course: Set up cones or markers for kids to Nordic walk, skip and run around.

🐾 Animal Walk: Pretend to be different animals—long strides like a giraffe or quick jumping steps like a bunny.

🏆 Relay Race: Organize a friendly relay race with other kids to keep it exciting.

  1. Make it a Challenge

Help Teens re-energise and explore further afield on more challenging terrain learning how to use the poles to support their growing joints whilst increasing their fitness too. Set a further challenge for your teens as they learn how to use the poles to aid walking when carrying heavy backpacks on the flat, up and down hills taking on longer expedition challenges!

5. Walk as a Family

Nordic walking is a great bonding activity. Plan family walks through local parks or nature trails and let the kids set the pace. Bring snacks and take breaks to explore interesting spots along the way.

6. Keep It Short and Fun

Learning to use the poles is tricky but fun too.  Kids and Teens love it ! Gradually increase the time as they get more comfortable. Let them lead and decide when to stop. .

Benefits Beyond Fitness

Nordic walking offers more than just physical benefits for children and teens:

🌟 Confidence Boost: Mastering a new skill helps build self-esteem.

🌿 Stress Relief: Spending time outdoors and moving their bodies helps kids feel calmer and more focused.
